Deep Cleaning Furniture Basics

1. Remove all covers and cushions. Check for loose buttons, broken zippers or any other items that need to be repaired.

2. If you have checked the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and know that the cushion covers may be washed, remove the cushion covers and check for stains. Pre-treat stains and launder according to the manufacturer's instructions. If the cushions are not washable or they cannot be removed, then proceed to the next step.

3. Use the hand attachments for your vacuum cleaner to thoroughly vacuum the entire piece of furniture. Make sure that you pay special attention to the crevices and corners to remove all loose dirt and debris from the furniture.

4. Inspect the cushions for any stains or spots. If you find stains, you will need to clean the stains by hand if you cannot remove the covers and wash them. Also, check for any stains on the frame of the upholstered furniture. You may need to spot treat the stains in order to remove them.

5. In the late '60s, the furniture industry adopted a code to identify how certain fabrics should be cleaned. Check the manufacturer's tag on your upholstered furniture to determine which of the four categories (W, S, W-S or X) applies to your furniture. Read the manufacturer's recommendations about what materials are best for cleaning the fabric either online or in your owner's manual. Following the directions, deep clean the entire surface of the upholstered furniture. Depending on the furniture cleaning code, you may be using water, solvents or commercial cleaning solutions; however, no matter what you clean with do not scrub the fabric with any abrasive materials to avoid damage.

6. Use a damp sponge to rub over the entire surface to remove any soap residue - - soap residue will attract more dirt if left on the furniture.

7. Allow the furniture to dry completely. Using a small fan will help the furniture dry faster and more thoroughly. Remember that part of deep cleaning is cleaning the wooden parts of the furniture too. Use a wood cleaner to clean and shine the wooden legs and arms of your upholstered furniture.
